Context

Ulster Museum is one of Northern Ireland’s most recognised cultural institutions, but research suggested that recognition wasn’t translating into personal relevance for all audiences. Younger adults, first-time visitors, and under-represented groups encountered different barriers. Still, many shared the underlying feeling that Ulster Museum was a fantastic institution, just not somewhere for them.

The challenge sat within a wider post-pandemic shift in cultural participation, as museums competed with more immediate forms of leisure and increasingly personalised digital experiences.

National Museums NI needed a new campaign platform for Ulster Museum that would work across all its audiences and touchpoints. Following a competitive tender process, they selected Big+Bold to lead the project, bringing a senior, hands-on team capable of combining brand strategy with creative execution and production discipline across broadcast, digital, out-of-home, and the museum’s own building.

Key objectives

Personal relevance
Shift public perception of Ulster Museum from “not a place for me” to one of personal relevance and belonging.

Built to flex
Build a flexible, creative platform that adapts to any audience, mood, season, and channel without sacrificing consistency.

Brand continuity
Evolve Ulster Museum’s existing Discover Together brand proposition without breaking National Museums NI’s wider Here for Good brand purpose.

Built to last
Design a system that could be produced cost-effectively and refreshed indefinitely, rather than requiring a new campaign every year.

Outcome

The first phase began rolling out in July 2026, bringing the platform to life across TV, YouTube, Meta, and physical rollout inside and outside the museum. A second phase, featuring a winter-graded edit of the hero film, is scheduled for January and February 2027.

As the campaign continues, it will be measured against National Museums NI’s wider strategic goals, including brand awareness and who is reached, visit intent, personal relevance, how people connect with the museum, audience diversity, digital engagement, and social impact.

The platform’s modular design means it can continue adapting well beyond phase two without needing to be reinvented.
